Keynote Lecture

Natural Language Processing in Information Retrieval

by Thorsten Brants (Google Inc., USA)

Abstract
Typical information retrieval (IR) systems are based on the bag-of-words model and use little to no natural language processing (NLP). Stemming is regularly used, but applying syntactic and semantic processing to improve results significantly remains an extremely hard task. This talk aims at identifying promising ways of using NLP in IR, and at identifying IR tasks that are likely to benefit from NLP.
